How Indian Television Shows Stereotype Men

Do you know what the Indian TV shows are guilty of? STEREOTYPES. The evil mother-in-law, the innocent bahu, and the docile daughter. And it's not just the women; they're guilty of doing the same to the men. What's worse is that these men are always, in some way, portrayed as puppets in the hands of women. It's time Indian TV did a reality check, because honestly, we're tired of seeing our small screen dudes fall into the same three stereotypical categories, over and over again.

The rich, handsome (no-feelings) Husband: He is the quintessentially super hot, good-looking, rich mamma's boy. He is always wearing expensive, tacky blazers. EVEN when he is at home. Come on, stop kidding us. Men love lazing at home in their boxers.

The father-in-law who is nothing more than an extra: He is the henpecked husband of the matriarch and perpetuates the age-old stereotype that men don't participate in domestic issues. Think Arun Rathi from Diya Aur Baati Hum or Raj Shekhar Singhania from Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. Enough already!

The youngest brother, who is nothing but a spoilt brat: Typically, he's shown as a loser, who lives off the money of his older brother and is basically, the "nithalla". Did we just travel back in time? Are we in the Paleolithic era? Bills, EMIs, high-maintenance girlfriend, travel ... How do you think he's going to pay for all of that? By getting off his ass and doing something with his life; something this younger T.V brother needs to do, asap.
